I just ran into some university students while walking miss buttons and we talked about our love for animals and the current issues facing the dogs and cats in our community. "We should just spay every dog and cat for free" was the comment the young woman made...and I thought..."wow, I sure hope the university and local schools embrace community service learning projects around the shelter and our city and county issues regarding animals here." Simple logical solutions will surely come into form and everything becomes possible again. The students can design and work on great projects they are inspired to engage and will learn so much through their research and problem solving and interfacing with existing structures to bring about loving transformation improving the lives of so many cats and dogs who need our help in the process.
I have a strong desire to bridge information to the community on everything from spay/neutering programs, fostering pets and animal behavior support...and how to engage loving solutions just to name a few things.
I would love to work with the local schools to educate children about animals as well as build relationships with faculty at Western New Mexico University, located here in Silver City, with the goal of integrating some of projects into the curriculum designs of educators who work with "Community Service Learning" in their courses.
If you have a passion to be a apart of this work, you can contact me using the email form below.
A Note To Educators In Our Area:
We want to let those of you who work with Community Service Learning in your curriculum that I would love to incorporate the schools in area into the future in our workings....if you have any inspirations or ideas about ways to teach your students while improving animal welfare through engaging citizen empowerment...feel free to let us know about them.
If a project surfaces that might be a good fit with any of the courses at your school, I will pass the information your way. And, I would love to hear any ideas that you have and work with you to help make them happen.
Through creating educational programs for local schools (ex. spay/neutering issues, how to care for a dog/cat), community organizing (ex. designing a foster care network for cats and dogs in need), local and state politics (ex. working with the Humane Society here in our area to get some local laws/ordinances changed that would help them do their work with more ease and effectiveness), using art and videography to educate and inspire (ex. making little films on various subjects such as "Why spay/neuter your pet?" or "How The Pet Population Came to Be So Unbalanced"), and other fun things to move us closer to becoming "no-kill" community through engaging students and the community together to raise awareness and bring about "real" change.
We welcome you to join us!

Issues Of Animal Abuse
It would be great for us to develop/enhance the local educational material on the relationship between animal abuse and domestic violence as well as animal abuse in children and later increased violent behavior. They have some material now at the Humane Society on this subject and I believe local law enforcement has done some educational outreach....but it would be really awesome to have this correlation demystified and elucidated and some support enhanced for victims and abusers to help stop these cycles.
If anyone is interesting dialoguing about this, please contact us.
